Sex and Design Axioms 4.7 http://spkr8.com/t/1544

Description:

Sex and Design Axioms describes the minimal rule set for designing interfaces: the foundational concepts that are required knowledge for designers and engineers to create usable and elegant interfaces.

A production stratification has evolved into stove-piped disciplines from information architecture to user experience to interaction design to usability to graphic design much to the detriment of designers. Emerging is the Renaissance interface designer: a technically savvy artist that’s fluent in typography, color theory, composition, layout, usability, interaction design, and code.

Juhan's presentation for Refresh Boston was fantastic. Not only were his slides well put together and informative, but there were plenty of takeaways for the audience including some of my favorites:

  • Fake data = fake design (don't use "lorem ipsum", put in the details)
  • Less ink, more bang (data is more important than the ink that makes it pretty)
  • Let data scream (like staging a scene in theatre, and ruthlessly edited, data should be 85% of the screen)
  • Go BIG (print out a giant to-do list that you can't avoid, make your printed comps huge so the errors are huge as well)

I also really enjoyed his points on business card and name tag design. A lot of people, including those that run conferences and social events, could learn something from Visual Angle Formula and data hierarchy mentioned in Juhan's presentation.

Juhan is a very engaging speaker and there was never a lull in his conversation with the audience, however there were a few times when he skipped quickly through some slides that I felt the crowd might've wanted to spend more than a second looking at. That said, Sex and Design Axioms was fantastic and I left with a lot of good ideas and some inspiration as well.
