Enjoyed the presentation. A bit disappointed at the content. Was looking for real world information or tech bits. Where to start, what to do.. For example recovery was the first topic mentioned. How should I check that backup and recovery is setup correctly without actually restoring a database. The presentation was highly focussed on soft skills. I am an SQL developer looking to improve my DBA skills, so I felt I did not get much out of it.

thanks for the comments guys. you are both correct, it was more about the soft-skills and not as much on tech. i do cover a bit more tech in the book, but it is level-100 type info. the target audience is for new DBAs that want to understand what it will take to be successful.

Well... I enjoyed the soft-skills coverage and thought the information was useful even as a "not so new" DBA. While some of the material was familiar it is information that is still useful "down the road". The focus on the career of the job and striving for excellence, not just adequacy, was inspiring. I think there is a lack of material for attaining the proper mindset of a successful DBA beyond just the technology. This discussion helped fill the gap. I believe this presentation is beneficial for the target audience and beyond and I'm looking forward to reading the book.

Slide background seemed washed out and distracted from presentation. It was good, but most of material I've heard before. Was expecting more DBA tips.
