Ads, widgets, and analytics - Oh my! 4.36 http://spkr8.com/t/2962

Description:

Embedding third party content (ads, widgets, and analytics) into your web page presents a performance challenge. More DNS lookups, HTTP requests, JavaScript, DOM elements, etc. all lead to a slower page. To make matters worse, these third parties have goals that are often in conflict with your page's speediness. These are the issues motivating Steve's new work on P3PC - Performance of 3rd Party Content. He'll survey the landscape by analyzing code examples for popular ads, widgets, and analytics, both good and (more frequently than not) bad. Steve will provide suggestions for what you can do to mitigate the current impact of 3rd party code snippets and will discuss future HTML5 features that improve the situation.

Yes, Steve IS the man! I've read his books, read his blog and use his tools, and I still felt like I learned a lot from his presentation. His latest blog post on the state of browser cache, which he also mentioned in this talk, is fascinating and will hopefully be optimized in future browser versions.

Steve's talk was highly informative and entertaining. There's no question that he knows his stuff. He presented a lot of useful javascript knowledge about external widgets and tools for testing website speed. Unlike most people who provide information with little to no evidence Steve's talk focused on measuring performance and improving website performance based on those measurements.
