Virtualization and SAN Basics for DBAs 4.91 http://spkr8.com/t/3154

Description:

These two technologies can make a very big - and very bad - difference in how your SQL Server performs. Wouldn't it be great if you could get the real, honest lowdown from a virtualization administrator, a SAN administrator, and a DBA? Wouldn't it be even better if one person had done all three, and could give you the pros and cons of each point of view? That person is Brent Ozar, a Microsoft Certified Master who's been there and done that.

Learn three things you should NEVER do when virtualizing SQL Server, three things you should ALWAYS do when using SQL Server on a SAN, and three metrics you should always capture on every SQL Server whether it's virtual or SAN-connected or none of the above.

Thanks, Brent. This made a lot of things much clearer for me regarding the virtual environment here, and gave me some good conversation starters with my VM / SAN admins. Great job. :-)

Brent does a nice job of mixing in humor with his presentations. The only negative to "Virtualization and SAN Basics for DBAs" presentation were the time constraints. Otherwise Great Presentation!

It's great to learn the language the SAN people speak, and I think your advice has a lot of credibility because you have walked in the shoes of all these people -- including us DBAs. DBAs do like to pretend they know about everything, and it was refreshing to hear a presentation that didn't mince words. I do wish you had a longer presentation time to allow a deeper dive into these topics.

Great presentation. I do think there some scope creep at times, especially since it was suppose to be about the basics. Or this may be due to my lack of knowledge on the subject, not sure. Some of it went over my head but that's why I tuned in to learn more. So over all I give it a thumbs up. Thanks

Great content and delivery! Appreciate you keeping it fun (CandyGram!) And great to keep it focused (the 3s). Your experience on both sides of the SAN (DBA and SAN Admin) really helps because you understand the concerns and can speak the language. I encourage you to present something like this at the PASS Summit later this year.

That was a GREAT webinar. I'm a DBA/Server Admin now learning VMWare and our SAN. Our other two DBAs are also SAN Admins and one is a VMWare admin. You definitely gave me some good questions to ask the SAN admins. I only wish the presentation had more time.

Just caught the webinar today, definitely helped my understanding of performance concerns with virtualization and SAN. Great job of breaking down the components and how they function, made it way easier to understand than trying to pick it up in trade pubs.
