Description:
In 2008, ACU jumped into the world of mobile web application development with a flurry of work over a short few months, with programmers working long hours and weekends to have applications ready for 1000 incoming iPhone- and iPod Touch-toting students. By this fall, the rollout of devices will reach all undergraduates and we've identified new application needs based on our two years of experience.
Our case study will compare the two development efforts with primary emphasis on the second project, describing how the involvement of our UI/UX designer from the beginning enabled the vision for a new in-class tool and how the use of SCRUM has re-energized our developers.

This was a really excellent case study presentation, and I'm so glad I chose to attend it. James and Chad had a good rapport and did a really nice job splitting the presentation; both had equally valuable information to share from their own perspectives working on various web apps for Abilene Christian University.
James spoke as the product owner for the headsUp app. It's clear that he has a great understanding for and a strong commitment to the Agile methods his team has adopted. His approach to the software development process seemed very realistic. His presentation style is teacherly. He seemed comfortable in front of the audience and engaged us well.
Chad spoke from the perspective of an independent contractor (UX designer) working with the dev team at ACU to develop various apps. He spoke well and seemed quite down-to-earth. I really enjoyed being able to follow his thought process through the sketches and unfinished designs he shared during the presentation.
Finally, it's worth noting that the live, interactive app demo was fantastic. Live demos can be scary, since they always have the potential to go awry ("Don't click the Back button!"), but these guys rocked it. It was fun to see headsUp in action, and the audience was really engaged. I'd estimate about 70% of us had iPhones and were able to participate.
Thanks for a great session!
