Adhearsion is an exciting open source Ruby framework whose goal is to make voice applications easy to build and full of features.

It is in use at Shopify, the Department of Defense, and many more, including major carriers in currently top-secret projects.

The recently released 2.0 version adds support for more VoIP servers and many new features. We will demonstrate how easy it is to build an application that answers a phone number, asks users for input, interfaces with external services, and much more. Plugins, testability, and self-documentation features will be explored in detail. Adhearsion makes it a snap to pull information from databases or LDAP, web APIs, Software- as-a-Service (SaaS) clouds, and any other source of data.

Usage of Adhearsion in our own projects has given us an understanding of best practices that will be shown and discussed. Many real life uses cases will be explained to give a sense of how broad the field for voice applications currently is.

Adhearsion is an open source project managed by an independent Foundation, guaranteeing its long-term development and maintenance.

Other presentations about Adhearsion have been made, including FOSDEM 2012 in Brussels, but this will be entirely new material, focusing on the applications that have been built since 2.0 was released as real-life examples.
