Today there is an ever-increasing amount of overlap in the responsibilities of developers and sysadmins, thanks in no small part to the DevOps movement and projects like Puppet and Chef. Unfortunately, most software classes teach you to treat the computer like a black box with nearly infinite resources. On top of that, most full-time developers have never worked in an operations role, missing out on some very valuable lessons learned by their ops counterparts.
