Despite our growing potential to augment human capability through technology, the innovation curve sometimes leaves behind people who could most benefit. We call this group the “digital outcasts” and they ironically reside at the epicenter of today’s most exciting developments, often through personal initiative and a decidedly grass roots approach. In this session, we’ll explore case studies in the areas of digital innovation, accessibility, health/wellness and citizen science. Case studies will demonstrate how meeting the needs of disenfranchised populations creates ambient benefit to wider audiences, and how the efforts of digital outcasts bring measurable value to the same landscape that threatens to neglect them.
