You're probably developing on the latest generation MacBook Pro or an 8 Core Windows 8 Ultrabook with 16 GB of RAM while your users are likely running Windows XP with 3.5 GB of RAM and out of date video card drivers. Whether it's native or web based you want your users to have the best experience possible when running your product. But without a giant budget you can't possibly test the wide range of hardware and platforms out there. How do you know the performance characteristics of your application when running in the field?
What you need is to collect performance metrics and usage statistics from real users on real world devices. I'll show you one way of doing so using techniques that apply to both Web applications and .Net desktop applications.
