Since its rapid rise to the top of the buzzword list, "Gamification" has been over-hyped and over-sold as a turn-key solution for creating desirable, engaging and ultimately profitable digital products and services. The game guru’s mantra of "adding game design elements to non-game contexts" to drive participation and satisfaction has been heard around the world as businesses begin to add points, badges and leaderboards to any and all offerings.

In this talk, you’ll learn about the roots of gamification; its hits and misses; how games and play can be successfully applied as a lens to design by; and why we need to discourage the thoughtless practice of tacking-on game elements to everything under the sun. Instead, we should dive deep into the core of what makes games engaging, pleasurable and valuable, and use that to create products people can’t live without.
