An organization’s website can be a sensitive topic among its staff. As regular users, staff often have strong opinions on the website’s content, design and overall management. Getting buy-in on decisions and new initiatives that staff may not fully understand is not easy; it can become even more difficult when those decisions include shifts in workflow, changes in responsibility and the necessity for staff to learn something new. When proposing changes to the website, those of us responsible will often find ourselves facilitating difficult conversations, convincing key stakeholders and breaking down roadblocks as we move things forward. In this presentation, we will discuss our own experiences in handling these types of situations in various contexts, including successes and lessons learned. We will advocate for change management strategies that can persuade staff to not just accept but embrace new ways of thinking, learning and innovating to improve the user experience.
