About the Talk

I start with a quick review of the current state of data warehousing including the benefits of the dimensional modeling (DM) approach and a discussion of the epic struggle between the Kimball-ites and the Inmon-ites. I demystify the terminology and address some specific practical areas related to data warehousing.
Attendees currently using traditional relational or object database techniques without any data warehousing experience or requirements should gain a significant technical advantage by including DM-inspired approaches in their tactical arsenal. DM approaches and hybrid relational/dimensional approaches offer unique benefits for meeting certain requirements elegantly, efficiently and cost-effectively.
This is a slightly abbreviated and modified version of the talk I gave at IEEE Computer Society New Orleans Chapter in October.
