Data Warehouse load patterns, schema design, queries are all different than OLTP systems, shouldn’t your storage solution be different too? This session will look at both physical and logical disk layout and their effects on Data Warehouse performance. There is a whole world of technical jargon and acronyms, we will demystify some of those, understand where to look to find bottlenecks, understand your SAN, and most importantly, why you care about disk performance. To tie all of these parts together we will touch upon some partitioning and compression and monitoring topics that SQL Server 2008 offers. When you are done with this session, you will be able to not only understand your SAN admin, but they will understand you; as you are empowered with some recommendations for effective disk layout for warehouse storage!
