The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Expenditure (CE) Survey is building a new data collection instrument—a mobile-optimized web diary—to supplement its traditional paper diary for the reporting of expenditures. Two rounds of usability testing were conducted to enhance the ease of use of the Mobile Diary. This presentation will focus on the first round of testing in which an enhanced, functioning wireframe instrument was used. The wireframe was created using Microsoft Powerpoint, Excel, and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and allowed the tester to login, navigate through the instrument, and enter purchases on a PC. I will outline the pros and cons of this enhanced wireframe testing approach along with the results of the usability test. I will conclude by discussing the usability issues that were missed by testing with the enhanced wireframe (i.e., those issues that were discovered while testing the fully-functional instrument). My hope is that this presentation will help viewers decide whether an enhanced wireframe is right for their project.
