We all enjoy well-designed, well-crafted products, but all too often our development processes (Agile, Lean) seem to pit shipping and quick iterations against a thoughtful attention to details. Sacrificing quality on the altar of quick is a dangerous mistake, especially as the bar for “good enough” continues to rise in 2014.
We see an ever increasing attention to detail, specifically when it comes the careful use of animation, typography, communications with customers, and creating all-around frictionless experiences. This attention to detail isn’t limited to Apple anymore. Instead, we’re seeing this across industries—companies like Uber, Square, Virgin, and Nest are sweating the details to dominate their competition through design.
I'll share the tools and processes to reconcile “getting it done” with “getting it done right,” showing how you can create a culture that values both shipping and quality. Together we’ll explore what craftsmanship looks like for (mostly) digital experiences, while sharing numerous examples of companies and products that are raising the bar for interaction designers.
How critical is a great experience? Who is setting the bar for excellent experiences? When are the details worth fighting for? And how should we go about doing so?
- Examples of how, precisely, the quality bar has been raised (these are always inspiring, and set the stage for all that follows)
- Assorted tools, language, models and such that will facilitate more fruitful product team discussions
- Suggestions for how to create a culture of quality (since this is so much more powerful than individuals putting in all the "extra" work to get things just so)
- How do you prioritize quality (if at all), and in particular how do you reconcile additional time sweating the details will cost with things like engineering velocity.
