Software is not just eating the world. Software is now eating hardware. And the pace of these changes is accelerating rapidly, as a tsunami of connected devices come online, creating a massive tide of data that flows from cloud analytics to edge management and the data center. APIs are the connective tissue between the emerging IoT world of software-enabled hardware and data to the world that developers understand. Focusing on creating a good Developer Experience (DX) integrating the hardware, software and data for your “thing” helps signal to developers that you are interested in helping them building fun-to-demo projects in a short amount of time. Good DX has more in common with UX principles than traditional developer relations or marketing. This talk will be about how to engage developers to want to build for your thing and will be drawn from my team’s experience at Mashery and Intel working with hardware startups and Internet of Things technology evangelism.
