President John F. Kennedy on the decision to go to the moon. Kennedy cites accelerating scientific progress as evidence that the exploration of space is inevitable and argues that the United States should lead the space effort in order to retain a position of leadership on earth. In response to critics who ask, "Why the moon?" Kennedy poses the rhetorical question, "Why does Rice play Texas?"
