Evolving Beyond Excel: Creating Interactive Data Visualizations With JS, HTML & SVG

Data are everywhere and come from tons of sources: our phones, social media, GPS, the government. According to IBM, we produce 2.5 quintillion bytes of data every day, but how do we begin to make sense of something that is omnipresent and exists on a scale we can barely comprehend? The short answer is data visualization.

Our eyes carry more bandwidth to our brain than roughly the rest of the other senses combined, so it’s about time we start using them to help us make sense of this data-driven revolution. In this session, we will work with d3.js to create a unique data visualization from scratch to help us visualize historical presidential election data. We will cover all of the basic concepts in d3, which include creating SVG elements, loading data from an external source (JSON, csv, etc.), scaling and mapping our data set, and adding styles and interactivity. After diving into d3, we will also look at some popular libraries that extend d3 to make it easier for the non-coder.
