Our oldest stories have been told using the stars. During this mini-workshop, attendees will transform an animated GIF into a “kinetic constellation” that comes to life in the night sky, adding a modern twist to this ancient illustration technique.

Throughout the process, attendees will take a tour of the GreenSock JavaScript Animation API, explore the code behind a simple visual web interface that will generate the SVG and JavaScript for them, and use Codepen to fine tune and showcase their work.

This technique works very well to represent biological movement, and can also be used for interaction design elements, information visualizations, and full-fledged animated narratives.

More details and examples »

What you’ll do: •Search the web for an animated GIF that represents the characters and movements you are interested in animating •Create your animations using a provided interface, and get working in a personal CodePen workspace •Tweet the end product and feature your work in your CodePen showcase. By tagging the work appropriately, we will create a library of SVG constellation animations that can be combined to create longer narratives
