When we describe IA as both a science and an art what exactly do we mean? I believe that IA, as it is understood in its mainstream form today, sits far more on the side of science centered on a sense-making proposition that holds value because of its relevance to technology and commerce.
What then emerges when we shift our perspective towards understanding the relationship between IA and art? For one thing, we are better able to conceive of IA as a form of design. We are also able to broaden our value proposition from sense-making to sense-making and meaning-making. And lastly, we can expand the scope of our field beyond science, technology and commerce towards science, design and the humanities.
